As founder of the American Friends of Balochistan, I urge those who have passed this so-called "independence resolution" in Toronto to show sobriety and to stop their efforts to sabotage the democratic process in Balochistan and Pakistan.

At a time when the Baoch masses are desperately in need of a breathing space after their tragic sufferings since the army assault on Dera Bugti in the winter of 2005, this hardline position by a handful of people in Toronto runs counter to the interests of the downtrodden and rag-wearing, or in Balochi the laggat maal and dirta puchch, people of Balochistan.

Such irresponsible resolutions, without support of the main Baloch political parties like the National Party, Balochistan National Party, two factions of the Jamhoori Watan Party, Pakistan Muslim League (Sharif) and Pakistan People’s Party, who have grabbed te majority of seats in the recent elections will only add to the woes of the people of Balochistan by inciting more violence and terrorism on the part of the gullible youth and isolate them even further in the body politic of Pakistan.

Such extremist and adventurist resolutions may help line pocket of a handful of individuals in Europe and the Americas with dollars at the expense of the blood and tears of tens of millions of Baloch youth, their hapless sisters and sad mothers in Pakistan.

Any communication about Balochistan must be addressed to moderate groups such as the American Friends of Balochistan and other groups who believe in democracy, secularism, reverence for human life and reject terrorism. These groups have trust in the democratic and secular leaders of Balochistan such as Baloch Nelson Mandela Sardar Akhtar Mengal and salutes his bravery and courage for throwing the gauntlet at the powers-that-be.

Balochistan is at a critical juncture today as for the first time in its blood checkered history a commoner "Pride of Mekran" Dr. Malik Baloch is most likely to be elected as the chief minister. It is a matter of serious concern that two terrorist attempts have already been made on the life of Dr. Baloch to groups linked to the BHRC in Canada and I am bringing this mtter to the attention of the State Department, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, among other international groups and foreign missions dedicated to protecting human rights and the rule of law.

I call upon all sensible Baloch in Canada to openly disassociate themselves from the folly of this dangerous resolution as the lives and well-being of their families might be adversely affected both in Canada and in Pakistan.

Unlike its more sensible and mature counterpart in London, I regret to note the BHRC in Canada takes extreme positions and has supported the killing of unarmed civilians by their silence.

I also call upon the Indian government to show responsibility and to stop funding such extremist elements as was promised by Premier Manmohan Singh in Sharam al-Shaikh in summer 2009.

I am alerting my contacts and friends in the US State Department and the Canadian embassy in Washington DC about extremist conspiracies against the democratic and secular forces in Balochistan.

Once again I like to repose my full trust in the democratic process in Pakistan, no matter how weak it may be, and welcome Dr. Malik Baloch as the first commoner to become the next chief minister of Balochistan.

The AFB will work closely with human rights organizations and all other democratic and secular parties of Pakistan to help promote and protect the rights of the people of Balochistan.
